Live Online IT Training vs In-Person IT Training

by | Oct 28, 2025 | Hints and Tips

As technology continues to reshape how we work and learn, IT training has evolved to meet the needs of increasingly flexible and remote teams. Whether you’re upskilling in Microsoft 365, learning how to create drawings, or diving into data analytics, choosing the right training format is key to success.

Two popular approaches—Live Online Training and In-Person Training—each offer distinct advantages and challenges. Here’s a closer look at how they compare in the context of IT learning.

 Live Online IT Training

Pros:

  • Remote Access: Ideal for distributed teams or individuals working from home. No need to travel—just log in and learn, although having 2 screens is important
(how to set up with multiple monitors on Windows)
  • Flexible Scheduling: Easier to fit around work commitments, especially for short sessions or modular courses.
  • Interactive Tools: Trainers can use screen sharing and other online tools to simulate hands-on learning.
  • Recorded Sessions: If you miss an element of the course, recordings for catching up later works well

Cons:

  • Technical Barriers: Learners need a stable internet connection and basic familiarity with online platforms.
  • Limited Physical Interaction: Harder to replicate the informal learning that happens during breaks or group activities.
  • Distractions: Home or office environments may not be ideal for focused learning. We have seen many pets and also deliveries interrupt a training session!
  • Engagement Challenges: Trainers must work harder to keep learners involved and responsive.  We do our best!

In-Person IT Training

Pros:

  • Hands-On Practice: Great for hardware-based training, labs, or complex software setups.
  • Immediate Support: Trainers can walk around, troubleshoot, and offer one-on-one help in real time.
  • Team Building: Face-to-face sessions foster collaboration and peer learning.
  • Dedicated Environment: A classroom setting helps learners stay focused and immersed.

Cons:

  • Logistics: Requires travel, venue coordination, and time away from regular duties.
  • Higher Costs: Venue hire, catering, and travel can add up.
  • Limited Reach: Not practical for teams spread across multiple locations
  • Travel can make for a long day

What’s Best for IT Training?

The right format depends on:

  • The type of IT skills being taught
  • Your team’s location and availability
  • Access to equipment or software
  • Preferred learning styles and pace

Some organisations opt for blended learning, combining live online training with in-person practical sessions to get the best of both worlds.  We have delivered many courses in companies that have some in house delegates and others joining Live Online.

Final Thoughts: Choosing the Right IT Training Format

Both Live Online IT Training and In-Person IT Training have clear advantages, and the best choice depends on your team’s needs, resources, and learning goals. Online training offers flexibility and convenience, making it ideal for remote teams or those with tight schedules. In-person training, on the other hand, provides a more immersive experience with hands-on support and stronger opportunities for collaboration.

For many organisations, a blended approach works best—combining the accessibility of online learning with the depth of face-to-face sessions. Whatever format you choose, the goal remains the same: empowering your team with practical, job-ready skills.
